From 1997 to 2007 I spent all my off time traveling around the back roads of the U.S.A. I began in San Francisco, went down the coast, across to Las Vegas, and continued east until hitting Route 66 and riding that in reverse to Chicago. In 2004 I did my longest stretch, Chicago to Salt Lake City for two weeks straight. For most trips I was lucky to have various partners with me. Some trips I took alone. This was before smart phones, and all were definitely before Walgreen's and Starbuck's on every corner. There was a lack of creature comforts and if wanted something that you could find at home you had better bring it along. I remember eating snowcones in a dusty one-shop Texas town. A giant tumbleweed rolling across the road near the Kansas border. And meeting some people along the way, a lot of whom are probably dead now. Now that I've stopped romanticizing, I'm sure they weren't all that remarkable except that they were there. And that was something. These are some of the photos from those trips.
